THE BRERA GALLERY

The Academy of Fine Arts of Brera was founded in 1776 in Palazzo di Brera upon request of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The Palazzo had been the seat of a Jesuit College suppressed in 1772.
The Brera Art Gallery (Pinacoteca di Brera) was born in 1809 with the purpouse of providing a support for the training of the young artists of the Academy of Fine Arts.
In the Brera Art Gallery are preserved some of the most important masterpieces of the History of Art.
From the Raphael's Marriage of Virgin to the Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio, from Mantegna's Dead Christ to the famous Kiss by Francesco Hayez.
